New Blahg Post

Because no one reads this I am able to rant about the going ons of Toyota Engineering and Manufacturing North American. Facebook is a definite no because they check up on that. Anyways, I have seen some pretty cool stuff, and worked on a mix of cool and boring stuff. Wow, stupid NDA, I can't actually talk about anything. Anyways, imagine yourself at a big long table, you have a filing cabinet and a computer, then its the next guy...who could be your boss. That is how Toyota's open office setting is arranged in Japan. We each get an L table and a one foot high divider, but no one gets a cubicle. Managers (really high rank, get a company car) sit with you, hell they could be sitting next to you. At first it was really weird, I felt a total lack of privacy and felt like I was being watched. Gradually I have come to appreciate it. I feel that it promotes communication and such. Anyways as a record of my co-op exp I will be updating with random co-op shit. To the few rando's that read it, don't tell Toyota.
Peace

Social Issues Again

I just finished watching The Constant Gardner, which basically was about how big pharma fucks everyone that does not have money. Basically this company was running drug trials in Africa by running a trial on the people there and covering up deaths from their drug instead of creating a better one that didn't cause deaths to save money. I don't know if I buy it, but it does raise a moral issue. In the past year Pfizer made 48 Billion dollars. Merck made 24 Billion. If you make money saving lives (something I believe should be in everyone's heart to do for free, or for a reasonable price if free is not possible) shouldn't you atleast try to give some charity out to people that aren't able to afford life saving drugs? I personally feel that it is the duty of the privlidged to help those that aren't able to help themselves. But then again, Africa's been SOL for the past few hundred years. That continent is uterlly unable to govern itself. Still, human suffering is a horrible thing no matter where it takes place.

What would be the most inconvenient thing to remove from your life, and why?

So I was actually just reading about something and thought about posting when I came across this question. I would have to say I would die without my computer. The problem is coltan. This metal is used in capacitors (your computer has a shit ton). I just read on yahoo! that Coltan is abundant in Africa, which always means bad news for those involved. Apparently when Sony released the PS2, the price of Coltan skyrocketed from $49/pound to $275/pound due to the demand for the metal. As a result, you have warlords rounding up hoards of labor, shooting anyone that wasn't useful, and literally working them to death in the mines. "Kids in Congo were being sent down mines to die so that kids in Europe and America could kill imaginary aliens in their living rooms," said Ex-British Parliament Member Oona King. Hmm, I own a PS2. I am pretty sure, if I had known about this I would not have bought said console. But what about all our other daily convieniences that uses Coltan, cell phones, PDA's, laptops, hell anything that has a capacitor or high ohm resistor. Could I give up all of these things? I could try, but would definitely not succeed. Is it wrong for us to detach ourselves from the suffering of others because of our actions as consumers? It is extremely difficult to put the blame on anyone, the general lawlessness that is Africa is partially to blame for all of the rampant greed, but is the source of all that consumer habits? I can't help but wonder how many kids died for the computer I am typing this on, the laptop that I barely use anymore, the moniter sitting idley in the corner of my room. Hell, we had a giant shelf full of resistors and capacitors in our circuits lab, more than you could count in a lifetime. At what cost are we enjoying the luxeries we have? What did we do to deserve the lives we lead and what did those suffering to sustain our lifestyles do to deserve their fates?

I don't usually get political, as the feelings of others usually isn't my thing...but its something to think about.
